The 706 model of telephone was introduced in 1959 and was the first British telephone made of modern thermoplastic acrylic plastics (Diakon). It has smooth curves, and is much lighter and more colourful than the earlier bakelite telephones. It was designed as a joint effort by the GPO Engineering Department, Ericsson's Telephones Ltd and the Council of Industrial Design.
